The term carries exactly this idea over to AI. Before someone freely uses generative tools in a work context, they should master the basic rules, recognise typical dangers, and know when they may not reuse an output unchecked.
It matters where the metaphor ends. The road driving licence is regulated by the state and legally binding. An AI driving licence is not. There is no authority that issues it, and no uniform exam. The term describes an internal measure whose value depends entirely on how seriously content, exercises and proof are designed. Whoever overlooks that sells a certificate of attendance as ability.

An AI driving licence works when it combines two things, clear permission and a documented minimum level. Without permission, teams use AI secretly and uncontrolled. Article 4 of the AI Regulation has required a sufficient level of AI literacy since 2 February 2025, graded by role and context. An AI driving licence can document the foundational level of this competence for many employees, and is therefore one possible building block. But it does not automatically cover the deeper requirements of demanding roles and is not an official certificate. Whether the programme is adequate overall is assessed by the company itself, and where appropriate with qualified advice.
